Weary Eyes

Can You restore them?
A tired mind and two weary eyes,

Aching feet and a knotted back.

The day draws to a end, hear the sighs,

The coffee cup is empty, energy depletes.

The laptop closes, to the kitchen you go.

You prepare the food with careful hands,

serving it with a prayer to the King on high.

In 10 minutes it’s gone, the dishwasher door opens,

you clean and tidy, ready for the morning.

To the sofa you go, your brain turning off,

slumped in it’s embracing comfort,

then you remember.

The pile of clothes in the washing machine,

wet, clean, ready for hanging up.

Your legs scream no, your head tightens,

you take a deep breathe and haul yourself up.

To the clothes you go, regretting you put that load on.

You hang them up with care and love,

and feel the sofa pull you back.

Slumped again, the TV goes on.

News, Netflix, Disney, something is missing.

Your mug and tea bag keep each other company,

the kettle has boiled and you drag yourself up again.

Exhausted, feeling drained, you don’t want to move.

Maybe I’ll just go to bed? It’s only 8 pm…

My Saviour, we are tired and we ache,

we are beaten down, the mundane takes our minds.

Jesus, your energy is what we need,

your strength, patience and joy.

Tired minds and weary eyes, can you renew them?

‘Yes’ you say without a shadow of doubt.

Can you restore our joy and our spirits?

‘Yes’ you say with utmost certainty.

You say, ‘Make dinner with purpose’,

because I AM your living bread.

You say, ‘Hang up the washing with purpose’,

because I clothe you with Majesty.

You say, ‘Sit back with purpose’,

because I give you Sabbath rest.

A tired mind and two weary eyes,

the Lord has restored, we are blessed.
